Brendan Rodgers decided to bring Odsonne Edouard to Celtic on a permanent deal in July 2018 after enjoying a promising loan spell with the club, and Sky Sports journalist Charles Paterson believes his form this season proves he was a wise investment.
What’s the word?
After the Hoops won their eighth SPFL title in a row, Sky Sports journalist Charles Paterson delved into the reasons behind the club’s dominance in a detailed analysis of the season.
Brendan Rodgers’ acrimonious departure may well have tarnished the campaign for plenty of supporters but the foundations he has laid for future success cannot be underestimated.
And that was a factor which Paterson alluded to in his analysis, with special praise reserved for £9 million man Edouard.
Indeed, Paterson suggested that the 21-goal hitman has thrived this season with a heft of responsibility weighing on his shoulders, proving that Rodgers was right to fork out for his signature last summer, per Sky Sports.
‘Following the departure of Dembele and the self-imposed absence of Griffiths, Odsonne Edouard has stepped up to the plate to lead the forward line virtually on his own.
‘The hefty £9m fee Celtic paid for him last summer has at times been questioned, but Edouard looks like a shrewd long-term investment.’
Club-record fee vindicated
The signing was one which was not unanimously backed by the Hoops faithful, but his ability to find the net consistently and pop up with vital goals in the dying embers of the game suggest that he could fire himself into club folklore in the coming years.
In this day and age it is seldom possible to sign a clinical goalscorer for anything under £20 million. Celtic, though, have managed to steal Edourard for a measly fee and, if he continues on his upward trajectory, there is no doubt he could develop into a £20m+ striker.
At just 21-years-of-age plenty of responsibility has been bestowed on his shoulders in the absence of notable options at centre-forward, but he has thrived, thrilled and tantalised for the most part under testing circumstances.
Indeed, Edouard has stepped up to the plate this season.
