Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has claimed that his side will only sign a centre-forward in the coming days if they are able to snap up “the best striker in the world”.
Although the Red Devils’ transfer business this summer has, on the whole, been impressive, the club are still light in terms of numbers and quality in attack.
Wayne Rooney looks to be LVG’s main striker, but beyond the England captain there is little in the way of firepower at Old Trafford, with rookie forward James Wilson and Javier Hernandez, who was shipped out on loan last term, the only orthodox options.

United have been linked with a host of big names as a result of this, but with just a week of the window remaining the club are yet to make a serious move to add another star to their attacking ranks.
And Van Gaal has claimed that things will stay as they are unless the club are able to sign “the best striker in the world” before the deadline passes:
“I have a lot of options, I have chosen Chicharito [Hernandez], because he is another type from Rooney, and we have also Fellaini, who is another type, then I have Wilson and Januzaj, so I don’t think we need a striker.” He is quoted by ESPN.
“If he is the best striker in the world then, yes, we need him, but if he cannot contribute in our eyes, then we won’t buy any striker. But when he does, we shall buy.”
Rooney’s fruitless 90 minutes against Newcastle on Saturday was his tenth successive game without a goal, but Van Gaal defended his skipper:
“He has to do what the striker has to do in our system and he does that, so I am very satisfied with him.”
