According to Corriere dello Sport, AC Milan are looking to sign Atletico Madrid captain Diego Godin on a free transfer next summer, but Liverpool should jump the gun and pay a small fee to secure his signature in January.
What’s the situation?
Under Jurgen Klopp this year, Liverpool have had their best ever start to a Premier League season and remain unbeaten in the league after 12 matches.
However, the Reds are still yet to win a trophy during the German boss’s tenure and, although they reached the Champions League final last season, the fans on Merseyside will be desperate for success in any competition.
Klopp has built a hugely exciting young squad and, with Virgil van Dijk and 21-year-old Joe Gomez at the back, he can be confident that his first-choice defensive pairing are sorted for years to come.
However, the loss to Real Madrid at the final hurdle last year showed a lack of experience in the Liverpool ranks, and signing Godin could be the perfect way to rectify this.
Born-winner
At 32 years of age, the Uruguayan defender does not fit the usual mould for a Klopp signing. However, he is a born-winner and his influence on the squad and the dressing room could mean that Liverpool are finally able to add to their 2012 League Cup triumph.

With 124 caps for his country and a number of different trophies under his belt, a player such as Godin would normally command a huge fee. According to Corriere dello Sport though he will not renew his contract with Atletico that runs out at the end of this year, so any fee at all in January would be a bonus for the Madrid club.
The former Villarreal defender was also linked with a move to Manchester United at the end of the summer transfer window, so Klopp could get one over on the Reds’ old rivals by signing him in January.
